Reliquary Kota Tribe Totem from Gabon

This striking reliquary totem originates from the Kota people of eastern Gabon. Dating back approximately 100 years, this piece has been authenticated by an art dealer as an early 20th-century example of traditional Kota craftsmanship. Known as a “mbulu ngulu”, this sculptural form was created to guard revered members of society, often placed in palace foyers to be visible upon entering. The totem’s role was believed to be both protective and spiritual. Carved from wood and adorned with original brass and copper sheeting, this figure embodies the distinct aesthetic of Kota reliquaries: a highly stylized, almost geometric form with an elongated face, crescent-shaped eyes, and a symmetrical, flattened structure—all designed to radiate presence and authority. This particular totem is deemed rare due to it's 'double-face' as it has a face on the front and the back -- making it more "protective". It stands as a powerful reminder of the ancestral reverence and spiritual sophistication at the heart of Kota culture.
