New Wave Songye Mask

Originating from the Songye people of the Congo, this mask features rich, timeworn hues—faded burgundy, deep brown, and warm amber—forming a bold geometric design that reflects the Songye’s distinctive aesthetic (it's also slightly reminiscent of Sponge Bob?). Traditionally, masks like this were used in spiritual ceremonies to invoke protection and ward off evil spirits, often associated with strength, fertility, and ancestral power. This piece is mounted on a newly made custom iron stand for modern display—yet can also be detached and mounted on a wall for a more traditional presentation. Whether displayed as a sculptural object or hung as a focal point, it invites both reverence and conversation. One of one.
