1920s Zigzag Side Table

This rare antique stool originates from the now Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and dates back to the 1920s–30s, making it ~100 years old. Hand-carved from dense tropical hardwood— likely Iroko or Afzelia, both indigenous to Central Africa—it reflects the region’s deep tradition of functional artistry. The distinct zigzag shape of the stool was a customary design of the Luba, Songye and Kuba people and often represented ancestral power and upward movement in society, indicating the stool's noble roots. Adorned with hand-applied metal studs and carved detailing, the stool’s craftsmanship suggests it may have served a ceremonial or status-related role.
